The dog was used as a tool only and nothing more. When he took the dog it became his responsibility.
According knew the dog died the next day for lack of food. During the inauguration knew that the dog was chased in the afternoon between the houses of aluminum and cardboard for a district of Managua with the name of a saint who could not say that Habakkuk at the time. There were five children of those who helped in the capture, who received bonuses of 10 córdobas comfortable for your cooperation. During the exhibition some people called for the release of the puppy, so that the "artist" was refused. The name of the dog was Natividad, and he was left to die of starvation in the face of all, as if the death of a poor dog was a shameless media show in which nobody does nothing but applaud or look puzzled. What part of the world would actually let a gallery perform these acts? a third world perhaps? maybe a civilized world?
He took a starving dog off the streets of San Jose, Costa Rica and tied it up in an art gallery. Food was placed where the dog could smell it - but the poor creature could not reach the food. The dog starving to death was Habacuc's work of art. "According knew the dog died the next day for lack of food. You want an example of the slippery slope of an art world where anything goes? This is just an extension of the moral depravity of artists like Robert Mapplethorpe with his bullwhip in the anus... of Andrew Serrano with "Piss Christ"... when you have acceptance of works like those, it is not a tremendous moral leap to starving a dog. It's all a matter of degree.
The artist in this case says he wanted to generate conversation about the plight of thousands of dogs that are roaming the streets, starving to death every day in his city. He has indeed generated conversation.
Vargas has a substantial career in Central America. He won honorable mention in the Central American Biennial 2006. That was Vargas pre-dog. Post dog, there's an international outcry against him, with a petition said to have 309,982 signatures asking the Biennial to change its plans to include him in 2008. Instead of being approached by authorities for what he did, and instead of going to jail for this act of cruelty, Vargas was chosen to represent his country at the "Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008," a heavily judged and highly selective art show.
This is what the stupid artist said:
"Says the artist: Hello everyone. My name is Guillermo Vargas Habacuc. I am 50 years old and an artist. Recently, I have been criticized for my work titled "Eres lo que lees", which features a dog named Nativity. The purpose of the work was not to cause any type of infliction on the poor, innocent creature, but rather to illustrate a point. In my home city of San Jose, Costa Rica, tens of thousands of stray dogs starve and die of illness each year in the streets and no one pays them a second thought. Now, if you publicly display one of these starving creatures, such as the case with Nativity, it creates a backlash that brings out a big of hypocrisy in all of us. Nativity was a very sick creature and would have died in the streets anyway."
There seems to be a contradiction between what she said (dog escaped) and he said (dog would have died anyway).
Winkleman called the piece vile. Is it art? He says he can't imagine what else it could be (here), which is a popular fall back position.
Is art no more than the thing left standing once other options are eliminated, like the last partner chosen for a dance? Isn't it possible that a creature who looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck might not, in the end, turn out to be a duck?
